Addiction treatment

Introduction & Overview of Addiction

For many years an unfortunate series of misunderstandings and misconceptions have surrounded addiction and addiction treatment. For many decades, addiction was seen as a choice or moral failing. Many members of society, the medical community, and the mental health communities believed addicts choose to drink or use drugs. They also believed that those who “truly wanted” to quit could do so with ease. Addicts lived with the potentially life-threatening stigma of addiction. These dangerous ideas led many in need of life-saving addiction treatment to avoid seeking help due to fear. Fortunately, the medical and mental health communities have developed a better understanding of addiction and the best ways to address the disease of addiction and the mental health struggles that accompany chronic substance abuse.

Today the medical and mental health communities continue to develop a clearer understanding of the complex disease of addiction. The impacts of addiction are seen throughout the body. In addition to damaging the heart, lungs, and other vital body systems, chronic drug and alcohol use lead to physical and functional changes to the brain. In time, the way the brain “works” changes, and without substances, the brain is unable to function “normally.” In time, the need to use takes over, and your focus on getting or using a particular substance persists to the point where it eventually controls day-to-day activities. When left untreated, addictive behaviors will continue regardless of known harmful and dangerous effects.

We Can Help Make It Both Possible and Easier

Partial Hospitalization program

What Exactly Is a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)?

A partial hospitalization program or PHP (sometimes referred to as day programs) offers intensive treatment without requiring an overnight stay at an addiction treatment center. Most partial hospitalization programs provide addiction therapy options like those provided in an inpatient residential setting. Treatment programs at a PHP are designed based on evidence-based therapy models, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT).

Partial hospitalization drug rehab is similar to other levels of care in that therapy occurs in a variety of settings. Throughout your program, you may participate in individual (one-to-one), group and family therapy sessions. The duration and frequency of therapy will depend on your unique treatment needs.

Our Partial Hospitalization Program in New Jersey

When you arrive at our partial hospitalization program, the first step is a comprehensive assessment or intake interview. During your evaluation, a member of our treatment team will talk with you about your medical and mental health history. They will also want to learn more about your history with substance use and addiction treatment. An intake assessment is an integral part of treatment planning development. The details you provide during intake are used to help members of your treatment team develop a unique treatment plan that outlines goals for you to meet during treatment and defines the best treatment models to help you attain and maintain ongoing sobriety. It also helps provide a clear understanding of any preexisting medical or mental health concerns which should be addressed as a part of your treatment program.

A PHP program is more intensive than a traditional outpatient program. Therapy sessions generally meet on weekdays during the day for several hours. Some programs also provide evening sessions to accommodate employment or childcare obligations during daytime hours. Most programs utilize a combination of individual therapy sessions integrated into a plan of several group meetings. Partial hospitalization drug rehab programs use various therapy models in both individual and group settings. The goals of addiction therapy are to help participants address and change maladaptive behaviors and thought patterns that led to addiction and ongoing substance use. During treatment, you will also learn and practice vital relapse prevention and recovery skills.
